About
Beginnings
Gideon and Jeremiah first met as kids in their small town in the Midwest. Jeremiah was riding his bike past the Great Pines Lumber Museum when he saw a boy lying prostrate outside the gift shop. It was Gideon, and he had eaten too much Captain Humely’s Lumber Fudge with Sawmill Sludge (fudge logs with caramel) and a whole jar of Mighty River Log Jam strawberry jam straight from the jar. Jeremiah saw that this boy needed a friend to guide him through the misery caused by his overindulgence. The friend Jeremiah had in mind was Jesus. A couple days later, things really clicked for Gideon and he began to see the importance of Jesus when he fell on his head after attempting to fly off his roof like Superman. He called Jeremiah, and the boys–all three of them– became fast friends!
Upon high school graduation, Gideon and Jeremiah headed over to Christ Our Leader College, where they were roommates all four years. Though school was important to them, and they loved participating in non-contact athletics (calisthenics, cheering on better athletes, etc.), they spent most of their time strummin’ and singin’. They didn’t know yet, but they were beginning to develop their careers!
Starting Out
After graduation, Jeremiah and Gideon moved into a small apartment and committed themselves to “making it” as a musical duo. They tried several acts with varying degrees of success, from “Community Unity” (their socially-inclusive acoustic duo) to “Conservation Conversation” (their eco-friendly two-man drumming circle). Still, it wasn’t until local Pastor Elaine Lyndale heard them “jamming” at a local coffee shop and invited them to perform “Special Music” for the congregation the next Sunday that God’s Pottery began to take shape.
Their first song was entitled, simply, “Jesus.” After an overwhelmingly positive response, Jeremiah and Gideon returned the next Sunday with a follow-up tune, “Jesus Jesus.” The next week, they played “Jesus Jesus Jesus.” As the crowds swelled and word started to spread, it became clear to the boys that they were on to something big.
But they needed a name! “Jeremiah and Gideon’s Religious Musical Project (JaGReMP)” was just too clumsy. It was then that their friend Kimmy Gatewood changed both their lives. “Why don’t you call yourselves God’s Pottery?” she said one day over Diet Sprites.1 “I mean, aren’t we all just pieces of God’s Pottery?” The boys knew they couldn’t top that one! The name stuck. The group was born.
Looking Forward
Since that wonderful day, God’s Pottery has enjoyed much success in the US and abroad, most recently appearing as finalists on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, where they were seen by literally hundreds of people. International triumphs include a 2006 Best Newcomer Nomination at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which was followed by a sold-out return run in 2007, and a selection to the Flying Solo series at the 2007 Montreal Comedy Festival. They have toured extensively throughout the US and played numerous festivals, including Seattle’s Bumbershoot, Washington State’s Sasquatch Festival, and the Charleston Comedy Festival, which they headlined in 2009. They currently have an EP out on Comedy Central Records, God’s Pottery: Live at Comix! And their first book, What Would God’s Pottery Do?, is available from Crown Publishing Group.

1There is some debate between Gideon and Jeremiah as to whether everyone was drinking Diet Sprite that day. Jeremiah insists that Gideon ordered a Fresca, but Gideon claims that he didn’t discover the wonders of Fresca until his first trip the Quad Cities a year later. The debate rages on!
